His Ex. Doung Setha, Minister of Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. A very honored and prestigious minister of the country.

He rooted from a middle class family whose mother was a mini-shop owner and father was a high school literature teacher. That was why he was brought up to love reading books and working hard. After high school, he got scholarship to pursue his university education in China. After 4 years, he returned to Cambodia with an offered job as an assistant in the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. Slowly, he could grab the highest position of the ministry. He got married with Miss Keth Rachana and has three children, two boys and a girl. He is a good husband and generous father to the children.

Her Ex. Keth Rachana, an active supporter and advisor to the Minister of Women’s Affairs. She was raised in a rich and old family in Cambodia. Because of that she was always taught to be a well-mannered and well-educated woman. In 2007, she was awarded for the Most Active Woman of the Year for her activeness against woman and child trafficking along borders. She tries to work out her best for her work and family.

Doung Veha, the oldest son of the Doung family. 25 year-old graduate from America. Veha left home since he was 10 years old to live in the US with his grandparents who freed Cambodia during the Pol Pot Regime. Along those years in the US, he never missed to contact his family. He returned home when his youngest brother Chetra had to undergo a surgery for a traffic accident.

He always tries to be a good brother and son. He is optimistic toward things around him but very self disciplined and confindent. He later is in love with Lundy, the closest friend of his sister.

Doung Kachana, 22 years old, the second daughter of the Doung family and a senior university student, majoring in Mass Media and Communication. Kachana is named the Charming Beauty of the university. Her beauty, intelligence and friendliness win her, at the same time, boys’ heart and jealousy from other girls. There are boys queueing to propose her to be their girlfriend, but she always rejects them.

She is the one who care about Chetra the most in the family. She later is arranged to get married with Asnarith, a son of her father’s friend, who she has met twice.

Doung Chetra, 21 years old, the youngest son of the Doung family. Chetra was a playful, childish, but intelligent person. He usually needs help from Kanchana when he wants to do or achieve things since he feels more confident and safe whenever there is Kanchana around. Chetra is called the prince of the university for his handsomeness and talent with piano.

He won the  contest of the Youth Music Amateur of the Year that led him to be selected to be trained as a musician for the biggest music GramDia.

Chetra is always protective toward his sister espescially when there are boys proposing to be her boyfriends. He said he did that because he wanted the best man in the world for his beloved sis.

Van Lundy, 22 years old. Lundy is the closest friend of Kachana. They never have secret toward one another. She is kind of  stubborn and straight girl. She would never say Yes if she thinks it is No.

Lundy is in love with Veha at the first spot they meet. And since Kachana works as match maker of these two, they they later become girlfriend and boyfriend.

Chey Asnarith, 24 years old. A graduate from England and the only son of His Ex. President of the National Assembly of the country. He fell in love with Kanchana the moment he met her and swore to get her his woman. He was kind and helpful person, but love changes him into a completely different person. He can do whatsoever to win Kachana.

Van Chanda. 21 years old. The only sister of Chey Lundy. She is a very beautiful, show-off but smart girl. She is Chetra’s girlfriend and classmate in the university. She is always protective toward Chetra over the other girls however she is always loose it when it comes to do with Kanchana.

Summary

They both were brother and sister from the same blood. They were brought up together and  leant to care one another, to protect one another and to love one another. The love and care for one another of Kanchana and Chetra made them the examplary siblings of the university.

After Chetra won the first place in the Youth Music Amateur contest of the year, he made a hard decision to join a training in Korea for one month with the famous music company of Cambodia, the GramDia. The decision earned him the first experience of being away from his beloved sister, loneliness and helpless.

On the 23rd birthday of Kanchana, Chetra rushed from Korea to surprise her on her birthday party. On the way, he got a car accident which led him to stay half a month in the hostpital. To have his sister by his side again and take care of him, he felt the price of the accident was compatible.

The feelings growing in Chetra for Kanchana was more than what he could figure out. It stayed suspecting and unclear untill Kanchana was asked to get married with Asnarith, the only son of the President of the National Assembly. To that point, Chetra knew he actually loved his own sister.

Chetra tried to hide his feelings and stay away from his sister. For Kanchana, she felt the same. However the more they tried to suppress their feelings, the more painful they got.  So the night before Kanchana’s engagement day, Chetra  quietly tiptoed into Kanchana’s room. He confessed his  true feelings for her and asked her to run away with him. However he got rejected as Kanchana was sure that that kind of relationship could not result. Though she told him that she also loved him.

They, later, could not hold the feelings for one another anymore. They started seeing each other secretly and used brother-sisterhood image to hide their truth while going on a date.  Since that moment, the world became a really beautiful place for them. They enjoyed every second they had together and tried to make sure of time they could be in each other’s arms as they could foresee that that kind of happy moment would end someday ahead of them. And for sure, slowly their relation was found out.

What would happen when their actual relation was found out and criticized by the society? Could they both make a successful jump on the endless-height wall? It might be time for them to say “we will meet in the next life” or what?

Chapter One

Part One

Sound of music and applauses that came from the auditorium of the Royal University of Phnom Penh could be heard all over the campus. From the entrance of the university to the door of the auditorium, there were posters and banners, “Welcome to the Youth Music Amateur of the Year 2009”. It was the most famous music contest for youths who played musical instrument as amateur. The ones who won the contest would be selected to be trained for work at the biggest and most famous music company of Cambodia, the GramDia, to become pro.

This year there were almost 1000 applicants, but only 10 were selected for the final round to perform in this auditorium. The hall of 500 seats was crowded with audiences, relatives and friends of the candidates. The hall looked so shinny and elegant with red carpet and soft yellow light.

It seemed like now is the toughest moment of the candidates and audiences since they were waiting for results. All the 10 contesters were standing on the stage while anchor was talking about this and that in order to kill time before they get the result paper. And off the stage, audiences looked so tensed and excited of who would win, for this year all candidates were all good almost like pros.

On the first row seats direct to the stage sit all the rich and high ranking people who came to supports their son or daughter. On the row a very beautiful girl in an elegant gown turned to a middle-aged woman sitting nearby and said, “I know it, Chetra will make it mom.”

The woman replied with a laughter, “Kachana, you seem to be even more excited than Chetra standing on the stage. You see? He is standing so elegantly on the stage like he owes nothing to anyone. ”

Then the man sitting next to the woman added, “Come on darling, you know that, she is always excited for his kid bro.”

Kachana was so excited when she saw the anchor getting the result to the stage, “Mon, dad, the results are coming….”. Kachana closed her eyes and whispered, “Doung Chetra number one, Doung Chetra number one…….”

The anchor now was holding the results, “So now the first place for the Youth Music Amateur of the 2009 goes to …. Goes to Doung Chetra, 3^rd year student of the Royal University of Phnom Penh…”

Just heard the results, Kachana opened her eyes and shouted in joy, “Yessss, Chetra yeassss, ….. mom, dad, you see? My Chetra did it.”

Anchor – Congratulations to Doung Setha who won the 1^st place for his piano music. Would you have anything to say to the audience Mr. Setha?

The audience clapped and Setha came to the Mic and looked to the seats where his family was sitting. He made a big smile on his face – To be on this stage holding the award, first I have to thank my sister Kachana …. Second… is my sister Kanchana, and last is my sister Kanchana…… Thanks sister….

Down stage, Kanchana looked so stunned and surprised with excitement as she was so happy for and proud of her brother.

Chetra and Kanchana were called the most charming siblings in the university. Their beauty bought them popularity among friends of the opposite sex and their behaviors and friendliness won them so many friends, plus they are smart and outstanding for their studies. In the university, from freshmen to seniors, from gardeners to the university president, almost none would never heard about these two siblings. Though Chetra was a year younger than Kanchana and studied at different class, they would be seen together sitting and chatting with friend when the break came. The two rarely quarreled, not even at the university nor at home.

Chetra walked of the stage toward their family. He walked straight and hugged Kanchana as the first person.

Chetra – Sis, I did it. I won the contest.

Kanchana – yes, you did it. And congrats.

Rachana – you only see your sister here? How about your mom and dad?

Chetra – Sorry mom. Mom and dad are very important to me … after my sister.

Setha – See what is he saying, he loves his sister than us as his birth givers. You, little boy….

The family talked and laughed that made all other audiences jealous. The family looked really a happy and warm family.

The sound of the telephone interrupted their conversation

Rachana – There is an international phone call. It must be Veha.

Hello?

Veha – Hello mum, it’s me Veha. Can I talk to Chetra?

Rachana – Sure

Chetra, it’s your brother. He wants to talk with you.

Chetra – Thanks mom….. Hello bro. I just won the contest… I am so happy.

Veha –  I know you can do it. Congrats bro. Do you want anything? I will give you as a gift.

Chetra – How about a new piano? Oh, that is too cheap. How about….. How about you come to visit us? Bro it has been long time we haven’t met, I almost forget your face, know that?

Veha – I know that, I also want to go back, but first let me finish everything here first and I have to really convince grandparents.

Chetra – ok, you promise. Bro I have to hang up to phone now, my friends are coming to congratulate me. I will call you later, ok?

Veha – Ok, take care of mom and dad too. Bye.

Just as Dara hung up the telephone, he heard someone called his name. He turned to the owner of the sound. It was Chanda, his girlfriend. She ran to him and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and handed him a bunch of flowers.

Chetra’s parents and Kanchana were so surprised when they saw Chanda dared to kiss Chetra in such a crowded place. They looked at Chetra and gave him an unsatisfied facial expression.  Seeing his family acted unhappy, Chetra stepped back from Chanda and acted reluctantly.

Chetra – Chanda, don’t do that in the crowded place like. You are a girl, you are the one who looses.

Chanda – I know that, I am just too happy that my boyfriend won the toughest contest. So….I wanna say congratulation. ……. So now let’s party for your success and for a future famous musician of Cambodia.

Chetra turned to his family with a reluctant smile and turned back to Chanda, “I think I should be with my family now. You and other friends go first and I will go later, ok?”

Chanda – But Chetra…..

Kanchara saw that Chetra was in a difficult situation to deal with his girlfriend. She went to them, put her hand on  Chetra’s shoulder and showed them a compromise, “Chetra, your friends are here already. You can go with them, we will wait for you to celebrate your success at home together this evening.”

They agreed. Chetra watched his beloved sister Kanchana and his parents’ leaving with a very gentle smile on his face.
